Project Difficulties and Restrictions

The project required an upgrade to the foundations of an existing partially built structure. Large diameter piles (1050mm) were required to be constructed to a depth of 37m, from the existing lower basement, 15m below the existing road level and within only 5.0m of headroom.

The Martello Solution

By undertaking the piling works for the new core from within the existing basement, the existing scheme could be demolished at the same time that the piling and ground works were being undertaken.
Piling works were undertaken in advance of any demolition and this achieved massive programme and cost savings.

The works undertaken in the basement also had significantly lower environmental impact to neighbouring businesses.

Specific Project Features

The project was first piled in the 1980’s and then further developed in 2007. Martello employed 2 No MP4000 series rigs to construct the 85 No 1050mm diameter piles
Rigs and materials were lifted into the basement via crane from street level through an existing core.

Future Potential

The large diameter piles provided by Martello are able to significantly increase the load capacity of existing structures
