Project Difficulties and Restrictions

As part of the Network Rail maintenance framework, Martello were required to install large diameter piles into the difficult East London ground conditions. 

 

The restrictions of the headroom, limited the size of the piling equipment which could be used for the project.
 

The Martello Solution

Having early contract involvement with Bam Nuttall, Martello were able to propose a large diameter piling solution and develop the MP4003 piling rig with a separate power pack and zero swing counter weight specifically for this project. 

 

Installing larger diameter piles allowed for the reduction of over 60% of the 600mm piles and reduced the reinforcement congestion issues due to the high bending moments imposed on the piles. 

 

Martello developed bentonite piling in an urban environment. This required tanks, de-sanders and multiple pumps within a residential and live road environment-why?
 

Specific Project Features

The maintenance of 5 bridges between Gospel Oak and Barking required 68# 900mm piles to be installed to a maximum depth of 22m.

 

The low rig height of the MP4000 allowed the piles to be installed whilst working beneath the bridges without causing rail or road closures. 

 

 The reinforcement was a mixture of 40, 32 and 25mm main bars coupled with Lenton P13.35 couplers. Temporary casing was used for the 5+m of gravels over clay. The clay was then dug dry before Bentonite support fluid was used to dig the Lambeth materials to pile toe depth.
 

Future Potential

The Martello technique offers the ability to install larger diameter abutment piles on confined locations such as rail bridges. 

 

The knowledge and expertise that Martello possess working in restricted environments allows similar schemes to be competitively delivered on time and on budget.
