Cleaning Toe & Desanding Bentonite Pile

Purpose & Scope

The pile once dug to depth with digging bucket/Bentonite auger will have a further 200mm

taken out and the toe of pile polished with a cleaning bucket (FIG 01).

The bucket will be raised slowly in order to contain any thick settlement of

sand & Bentonite from toe of pile then emptied into a bunded area.

The depth of the pile will then be recorded and a sample taken from the toe of pile with a Bentonite sampler

(FIG 03).

A full range of tests listed in the Bentonite specification will be carried out on the digging mud and recorded

(FIG 04).

The results of the Digging mud tests will be analysed and if they do not meet the parameters in the specification the bentonite in the bored pile will be exchanged and screened.

The tremmies will have a 4 inch Bauer fitting on the top cap that will be attached to a 6 inch pump tin line to pump back to the Bentonite farm for screening.

Procedures

Step 3 /3

The pump will be started & the bentonite will be sucked from the toe of the pile through the tremmie pipe & refilled from the top of the pile (FIG 6).

The Deasander will be observed to see how much material is coming from the screens (FIG 07), when the amount of material coming from the screen reduces rapidly (FIG 06) then the Bentonite from the toe pile can be re tested & recorded on the Bentonite Record Sheet.

The exchanged Bentonite test results will have to be within the parameters in the specification, if so the tremmies can be removed, the pile cage installed & the tremmies replaced to the toe of pile.

A final toe length will be taken & recorded; the pile is ready for concrete.
