Secant Wall Integrity Problems

Secant wall integrity problems at best produce nuisance damp patches or leaks, but at worst may allow large scale water and material ingress.

Primary Reason

In fill female piles are unable to provide an adequate seal between the male piles, to prevent the passage of water or ground material through the secant wall.

Possible Causes

Lack of interlock between male and female piles

Damage to female piles by the digging technique causing cracking to the female mix.

Lack of bond between the interlocking surface of the male and female piles creates a water path between the piles.

Female pile material of inadequate strength durability.

Lack of interlock between male and female piles

Likely Scenario
  • Accuracy of pile verticality is not sufficient to maintain an overlapping secant with pile depth. Augers may become displaced by an over-hard female mix.
Possible Causes

Damage to female piles by the digging technique causing cracking to the female mix.

Likely Scenario
  • Female piles cut with an auger receive 2 No. impacts per auger rotation. These impacts will be of greater magnitude than those delivered if the females were cut with multiple small teeth on the perimeter of a cutting casing.
Possible Causes

Lack of bond between the interlocking surface of the male and female piles creates a water path between the piles.

Likely Scenario
  • If the concrete of the male pile is not of sufficiently high workability to immediately fill the volume of the casing (as the casing is withdrawn) then this space may be filled by ground movement, preventing a bond forming between the male and female piles.
Possible Causes

Female pile material of inadequate strength durability.

Likely Scenario

Insufficient cementitious material or poor concrete mix design – (see concrete for piling). The formation of the female piles by a designed female mix is superior to soil mixing which may be highly variable in its consistency.
